   Description of Research Group:The Institute of Artificial Intelligence, Southwest Jiaotong University was established on June 6, 2018, built upon the foundation of the Sichuan Province Key Laboratory of Cloud Computing and Intelligent Technology in Universities. It is home to a high-level research team that includes IEEE Fellows, members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, national outstanding scientific and technological workers, members of the Ministry of Education's Science and Technology Committee in the Department of Computer Science, leaders of the "Ten Thousand Talents Plan," Changjiang Scholars, recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and heads, deputy heads, and members of expert groups for major national R&D programs, such as the National Key R&D Program, the Science and Technology Support Program, and the 863 Program.
The institute has jointly established several key platforms, including the Ministry of Science and Technology's Key Innovation Team in Cloud Service Platform Technology, the International Joint Research Center for Modern Transportation Communication and Sensing Networks, the National Engineering Laboratory for Comprehensive Transportation Big Data Application Technologies, the National Engineering Laboratory for Urban Rail Transit System Safety Assurance, the National-Local Joint Engineering Laboratory for System Trustworthiness and Automatic Verification, and the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Railway Traffic Information Engineering and Technology.
Currently, the institute has more than 160 postdoctoral, doctoral, and master’s students. It has undertaken over 60 international collaboration projects, national key R&D programs, the National Science and Technology Support Program, the 973 Program, the 863 Program, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and other provincial and ministerial-level projects. The research team has published over 500 academic papers (with more than 300 indexed by SCI/EI), authored 8 books, published 18 international conference proceedings, and 10 special issues in SCI journals. It has been granted over 30 patents. The institute has established extensive scientific and technological cooperation and exchange relationships with numerous universities, research institutes, and enterprises both domestically and internationally, with considerable influence.
The main research fields of the institute include the theoretical foundations of artificial intelligence, intelligent transportation, smart grids, intelligent manufacturing, intelligent civil engineering, smart healthcare, and smart cities, among others.
The Institute of Artificial Intelligence, Southwest Jiaotong University is dedicated to meeting the information processing needs of the big data era, striving to create a democratic, open, relaxed, and collaborative academic and research environment. It attracts top talent from both domestic and international spheres, actively undertakes international and national AI-related research projects, and promotes academic exchanges and cooperation both within China and globally. The institute aims to achieve domestic leadership in basic theories and applications of artificial intelligence and make significant innovations at the technological frontier. The institute has trained over 100 graduate students (including more than 10 postdoctoral researchers and over 30 doctoral students), with alumni employed at internationally renowned research institutions such as Microsoft Research Asia, top universities like Sichuan University, and leading companies like Huawei, JD.com, Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent. The students trained by the institute have published more than 500 papers in international journals, including PNAS, AI, IEEE TPAMI, IEEE TKDE, IEEE TEC, IEEE TIP, IEEE TFS, IEEE TIFS, IEEE ASLP, IEEE TIE, IEEE TC, IEEE TVT, as well as in domestic journals such as Chinese Science, Journal of Computer Science, Journal of Software, Journal of Railway Engineering, Journal of Automation, Journal of Electronics, Journal of Communications, and Journal of Computer Research and Development. Their work has also been presented at top international conferences, including AAAI, ACL, IJCAI, KDD, WWW, UbiComp, ICDM, SDM, EMNLP, CIKM, with 5 papers selected as ESI Hot Papers and 21 as Highly Cited Papers. The institute has received over 20 international and national paper awards, including first place in the Tianchi Big Data "Sina Weibo Interaction Prediction Competition" (with a prize of 200,000 RMB), second place in the International AI Conference Competition "Social Impact Analysis", second place in the AI Global Challenge "AI Weather Forecast Challenge", and the Grand Prize in the National College Artificial Intelligence Innovation Competition.
The institute has collaborated with institutions such as University of Technology Sydney (Australia), University of Hagen (Germany), and University of Cagliari (Italy) to offer dual Ph.D. degree programs, and has visited prestigious universities like Stanford University, Harvard University, University of California Berkeley, University of Waterloo (Canada), University of Sydney (Australia), as well as leading companies such as Microsoft, Google, IBM, Facebook, HP, and Cisco. The institute has organized or hosted over 20 international and national conferences/workshops and jointly held more than 10 international academic conferences with universities such as Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, University of Technology Sydney, and others. It has been invited to give more than 40 keynote and invited talks at international conferences.
