Description of Publication:Surface engineering of carbon nanodots (C-dots) is a key bridge to connect the C-dots with biomedical applications. In this chapter, recent developments in functionalizing carbon nanodots toward bioimaging and biosensing applications will be reviewed with special focus on their applications in living cells, tissues, and animals. In particular, our work on the synthesis and surface engineering of C-dots for intracellular Zn2 + detection and multimodal bioimaging in vivo will be highlighted. This chapter will be concluded by outlining potential directions in engineering C-dots for multiplexed detection, multimodal imaging, and theranostics.
