Wenbo Fan's research focuses on developing key theories and algorithms for "Advanced technology-driven Public Transportation (AtPT)." The goal is to achieve "Rapid, Reliable, and Seamless (RRS)" urban transit services by leveraging new mobility technologies such as ride pooling, shared micro-mobility, autonomous driving, modular vehicles, and new-energy vehicles.
To approach the vision, his research emphasizes the smart application of (continuous) physics models, (discrete) mathematical programming models, artificial intelligence, and simulations in the planning, design, operation, and real-time control of public transportation.
Wenbo Fan has authored over 60 papers in peer-reviewed journals and conferences, including Transportation Research Part B, C, E, IEEE-T-ITS, and Transport Policy. He's led projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, the Sichuan Provincial Department of Science and Technology, the Sichuan Provincial Department of Education, Chengdu's Innovation Project, and co-led a general project from the Hong Kong Research Grants Council, along with over ten projects related to the application of transportation technology.
His research has been featured in the U.S. media outlet Next City, and he won the third prize for the Science and Technology Award from the China Intelligent Transportation Association and the Excellent Award in Urban Science from the 4th Qian Xuesen Urban Studies Forum.
He serves as Editorial Board Member of Scientific Reports (Nature Portfolio) and reviewer for several prestigious journals, including Transportation Science, Transportation Research Part A–E, Transport Policy, and Transportmetrica A. Additionally, he holds the position of invited expert for the Sichuan Public Transport Association, Chief Scientist for bus operations at a private company, and head of a university-industry collaborative graduate training base. His research group has successfully graduated 19 master's students and 2 PhD candidates, with an additional 20 students currently enrolled.
