In 1952, he graduated from the Mechanical Department of Tangshan railway University (now Southwest Jiaotong University), and now he is a professor and doctoral supervisor of Southwest Jiaotong University. In 1961, he received the associate doctor's degree in technology and science from Leningrad Railway College of the Soviet Union. Shen Zhiyun has made outstanding achievements in the research of locomotive and vehicle dynamics, especially wheel rail dynamics, motion stability, curve passing theory and random response. The non-linear creep force model of wheel rail created by Shen Zhiyun has been widely used in the world as "Shen's theory"; he presided over the development of the first forced steering truck in China and created a new record of no wheel flange wear; he presided over the establishment of the Rolling vibration test-bed of rolling stock has reached the international advanced level. He once served as deputy director of China Railway Heavy Haul Committee, chairman of Sichuan Railway Society, chairman of Chengdu Association of science and technology, and won Zhan Tianyou achievement award, first prize of national science and Technology Progress Award and other awards.
