Abstract:As an essential function in software defined networks (SDN), the link failure detection typically runs at all SDN controllers on a periodical basis. To reduce the number of messages processed by the SDN controller, an efficient and lightweight link failure detection mechanism is proposed, where switches actively inform SDN controller about the faulty link. Hence, SDN controllers do not need to process feedback from switches in each detection round. The experimental results show that compared with the most commonly-used failure detection mechanism, the proposed one can significantly reduce the overhead of the SDN controller.
