The Destruction and Rebirth of an Old Bridge: Negotiation of Reuse with Collective Memory in Post-Disaster Restoration of a Vernacular Heritage Site
发表刊物:Conservation and Management of Archaeological Sites
摘要:Current discussions have noted the re-constructible nature of heritage authenticity in a post-western context. However, it is still questionable how to coordinate the reuse of heritage with collective memory and community sentiment in the post-disaster context. The study takes the Zhenhai Bridge in China, as a case study which is on the national heritage list but is also as a vernacular structure that was destroyed by floods in 2020 but then quickly reconstructed, arguing that the reconstruction of the bridge is politically significant and necessary to heal emotional trauma of citizens. This means the heritage site reuse needs to be considered in both its tangible and intangible dimensions as an integrated whole. However, due to the distortion of appearance and the change of function, it has ontologically been completely divorced from the citizens and the local community, thus resulting in the complete loss of activation and intangible authenticity of the heritage site.
