- Abstract:The optical resolution of ground-based telescopes is severely affected by atmospheric turbulence. An instrument based on parallel laser beams is introduced to measure local regional atmospheric turbulence inside and outside telescope domes and in laboratory environments. By imaging parallel laser beams with a telescope system and analyzing centroid fluctuations on a CCD,the atmospheric coherence length is derived. Laboratory experiments and on-site measurements at the Lijiang Observatory demonstrate that the instrument can effectively characterize local and dome-related atmospheric turbulence.
