Prof. Hu is mainly engaged in engineering geological issues of major hydropower projects and traffic engineering, such as the stability of slope and surrounding rock masses underground excavation, geological hazards and prevention, etc. In 2008, soon after “5.12” Wenchuan Earthquake, as a specialist consultant of geological hazards prevention, Prof. Hu participated in the entire procedure of Earthquake Relief Consultation Service works of Tangjiashan Barrier Lake, and was warmly received by Premier Wen Jiabao and was praised by Sichuan Provincial Committee and Government for his hard works.

　Prof. Hu has published more than 90 papers in geotechnical or related fields. Also he has published 9 monogragh and presented 2 patents for invention. Among the national and/or the provincial scientific research projects directed (cooperated) by Prof. Hu, one was awarded the National Science and Technology Progress Achievement Reward. In addition, the first, the second, and the third awards are 3, 5 and 5 issued by Provincial (National) Science and Technology Administration, respectively.

　Prof. Hu was awarded “Young and Middle-Aged Specialist of the Railway Ministry with Prominent Contribution or Achievements” in 2000, and “Sichuan Provincial Specialist with Prominent Contribution or Achievements” in 2003, “Sichuan Provincial Scholarship Leader” in 2005 as well as “Mao Yisheng Railway Science and Technology Awards” and “The 5th Zhan Tianyou Science and Technology Awards of Southwest Jiaotong University” in 2008.
