Research Interests
Static and dynamic stability analysis methods of rock or soil mass in cut slopes, embankments, landslides, and tunnels
Calculation theory and design method of retaining structures including various types of stabilizing piles, anchorage structures, group of combined micropiles, and geosynthetic-reinforced soil retaining walls in geotechnical engineering
Applicable prevention technology of geo-hazards including landslides, debris flows, and rock collapses
Shallow and deep foundation engineering covering bearing capacity on or near slopes, composite foundation in soft soil , mechanical behaviours of deep pile foundation as well as pipeline engineering
New types of high embankment construction in the area of problematic soils such as soft clay and expansive clay and in the dangerous mountainous area with steep terrain
These research has been supported by five national funding, ten provincial funding and more than forty industrial projects.

RESEARCH Group
Prof. Xiao is leading an academic group named Geomechanics and Slope Engineering in Southwest Jiaotong University. Dr. YANG Hufeng and Dr. CHEN Tingjun are two fixed researchers of the group. There are some independently developed test equipment and apparatuses in the group such as large-scale model test box and direct shear apparatus with large shear area.

I am available for supervision of PhD and Master. Over the past five years, I have supervised and graduated 4 PhDs and 26 Masters, who published more than 10 international top journal papers as the first author in the area of Geomechanics and Geotechnical Engineering as well as Geological Engineering.
