Teaching Philosophy

Confucius, a great thinker and educator in ancient China, said that there shouldn't be any distinction in social status when being educated; this contains at least two layers of meaning. First of all, nobody should be left behind. Everyone, good or bad, rich or poor, healthy or sick, should receive an education. Moreover, the concept of classes or social status is deeply rooted in people’s mind, but education can help to bridge the gap and eliminate these differences. In my early teaching career, I saw my role as a mere instructor, who only explained and transferred knowledge to the learners in the class. But now in my opinion, as a university teacher, I sincerely believe that learning happens when students set learning goals, explore the links between theories and the real world, and constantly improve themselves. One of my favourite quotes is by William Butler Yeats: “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” This quote aptly explains why I teach. My role, as a guide rather than an instructor, is to wake up their original power of learning and facilitate their learning process.
