Cheng  Qian-gong, born on December 12,  1962, received his MSc degree in specialty of Structure Geology from the  University of Chang’an, PRC, in 1987, and Ph.D. degree in Hydrogeology and  Engineering Geology from the University of Chang’an, PRC, in 1997. In 1999, he  became the Post-doctoral of Civil Postdoctorate at Southwest Jiaotong  University. In 2000, he became the Senior Visiting Scholar of Institute of  Mountain Hazards and Environment in Chengdu, Chinese Academy of Sciences. In  2001, he became the Post-doctoral of State Key Laboratory “Geological Hazards  Protection and Geological Environmental Protection” at Chengdu University of  Technology. Now he is working as a lecturing professor and the Ph.D. supervisor  for the Department of Geological Engineering, Southwest Jiaotong University,  PRC. He  serves as a chaired  Professor of Geo-Environmental Disaster Reduction in UNESCO and a member of  China National Team of International Association for Engineering Geo-Environment  (IAEG) and International Research Association on Large Landslides, and is an  honorary fellow and assistant president of International Consortium on  Geo-Disaster Reduction. He is a  member of the editorial board for Journal of Geo-Disasters and Journal of  Engineering Geology. Besides, he is a member of the Teaching Guidance Committee  of Geology Majors of Institutions of Higher Education and an expert in the  National Evaluation of Degree and Postgraduate Education of the Ministry of  Education. He also serves as an expert in Railway Science and Technology of the  Ministry of Railways, the Expert Databases of Ministry of Railways, Sichuan  Province, and the Geological Disaster Prevention and Control Technical of  Sichuan Provincial Land and Resources Department.

As the academic leader in the research of “Geological  Hazards and Prevention” at Southwest Jiaotong University, Prof. Cheng is mainly  engaged in theoretical research and engineering practice of major engineering  hazards and prevention in the field of geological engineering, geotechnical  engineering, disaster prevention and mitigation works and protective works, etc.  What’s more, he has obtained major breakthroughs and innovations in the research  of Dynamic mechanism of High-Speed Landslide. He has successively chaired and  main researched programs from National Natural Science Foundation of China,  China National Funds for Distinguished Young Scholars, the National Basic  Research Program of China (973 Program), the Important Project of Ministry of  Education, the "Chunhui" program of Ministry of Education, the Technological  Research and Development Programs of the Ministry of Railways and Development  Project of Transportation Construction in western of China, the Ministry of  Communications, etc, over 70 scientific research works. He has successively  published more than 140 papers in major journals at home and abroad and  international meetings and 5 monographs (including co-author). He also obtained  the second and third Prizes of Technology Advancement Award in provincial and  ministerial level 7 times.
